I’m literally sobbing in frustration over this right now.
How can anyone think that violently capturing an intelligent being, tearing them apart from their family, importing them across the globe then chucking them in a concrete tank is ‘the right thing to do’? They damn well KNOW it is not the right thing to do, or else they wouldn’t feel the need to state that 100 times. Not only that, but if they truly loved animals, they wouldn’t dream of doing anything that could hurt them.
How dare he say it won’t negatively impact them? Tell that to the mothers who will lose children. The ones who will lose siblings. This is animal cruelty at it’s absolute worst. Would this man feel okay if someone stole his family away and locked them up for ‘research’?
I’m someone who is very on the fence about animal captivity, but anyone who could support the capture of wild animals (particularly intelligent animals such as cetaceans) has to have been born without a god damn soul.
I’m broken right now.I’m super torn about this too :( I obviously don’t want to support the GA aquarium anymore, but now, the belugas will obviously be shipped to aquariums in the US that house belugas. The only aquariums that house belugas happen to be my top 3 favorites! Mystic (Please dear GOSH Mystic, Don’t buy any of the ‘lugas!) Honestly, I couldn’t stop going to Mystic, I just couldn’t. I would miss my baby too much :’( And SeaWorld! I know that they’re not the best, but you have a bad enough rep already, don’t go buying ‘lugas that were captured by the Russians…just don’t :( and Shedd! Why it was Shedd that reintroduced me to cetaceans and helped re-kindle my love for them! If they buy the belugas, what am I going to do!? And of course, without those 3 the GA aquarium is the last aquarium left that can house belugas. And they can’t house 22 belugas at once. But they wouldn’t send any of the 18 back and they’re only shipping the belugas to US aquariums…So one or worst of all, all of my 3 favorite aquariums, all of which mean SO MUCH to me and have done countless amazing things for me throughout my entire life…I can’t just stop supporting them…but this…UGH WHY?!
all that has been said right now is completely accurate!
its shit like this that gives all marine mammal exhibits a bad rep.
Guys, the reason why we really need to stick together on this issue is because if these permits are approved, it will simply pave the way for more animals to be captured and imported.
Sure, the belugas have already been captured, but the permits are still not yet approved. If the government decides to allow these belugas into the country, other marine parks might think “well hey, if the GA can do it, why not us?”
There NEEDS to be a backlash against this, there NEEDS to be a huge outcry. It’s saddening to say that maybe it won’t help the belugas that are already captured, but it WILL make parks second guess their future decisions to capture animals.
And say these permits are approved - what next? Who’s to say these parks won’t decide to destroy some wild dolphin pods? Or maybe wild orcas will be next on the list?
If we start allowing these captures now, it will only snowball and get worse.
So please, don’t give up! Don’t let them get away with capturing these animals! You guys have always been happy to say that wild-caught animals haven’t been imported to the US for the last 20 years, don’t let them change that now!
YES! Just last year, Ocean Park Hong Kong was planning on capturing belugas and due to public outcry, they scrapped their plans. This COULD happen in regards to the beluga’s importation into the country with this incident. There is no such thing as “humane” wild capture. We all know it’s wrong, so stand against it! Sign petitions, send emails! I’m sure the belugas will be grateful.
